Problems Associated with the Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Implant Failure

If you are one of the nearly 20,000 people who received a Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip implant, you were likely dismayed to hear of the Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip recalls in July, 2012. The Rejuvenate and ABGII devices had been on the market barely more than two years at the time of the recall. Prior to the recall the FDA received a significant number of adverse event reports related to the two implants. Patients complained of Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip metallosis and Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip blood toxicity. Other patients experienced Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip pseudotumors which they had to have surgically removed. The design of the Rejuvenate and ABGII was considered cutting edge at the time of the release.

Rather than using a metal ball, Stryker use a ceramic ball, believing there would not be the metal-on-metal corrosion at the ball/neck junction as seen in other “true” metal hip implants. Stryker also offered a variety of neck and stem components which allowed surgeons to custom fit the device to the individual patient according to body type, gender and level of activity. Stryker claimed the design would add anatomical stability, would last much longer than other hip implants and would be much safer than other metal-on-metal hip implants. Despite claims to the contrary, Stryker was forced to recall the ABGII and the Rejuvenate due to Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip corrosion and fretting which led an excess release of cobalt and chromium ions into the surrounding tissues and bloodstream.

Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip metallosis can lead to pain in the hip, groin and thigh, deterioration of bone and tissue, chronic inflammation and total hip failure. Metal ions which reach the bloodstream can result in Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII chromium and cobalt blood poisoning which brings a number of serious, adverse health effects. Mississippi residents should meet with an experienced Mississippi Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip lawyer to discuss the injuries suffered from their Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip implant.

How the Mississippi Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII Hip Statute of Limitations May Affect You

Mississippi, like many other states, has a two-year Mississippi Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip statute of limitations for product liability cases, beginning on the date the injury occurred. While this sounds relatively straightforward, there can be a number of issues associated with determining when your injury occurred. Perhaps you began having problems immediately after your Stryker hip implant, but did not tie those problems to the Stryker device. Perhaps you have not yet experienced problems with your Stryker implant, but want to preserve your right to file a lawsuit against the company that caused your injury. Either way, contacting a knowledgeable Mississippi Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip lawyer can help you determine when your Mississippi Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip statute of limitations will run.

The Current Status of Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII Hip Lawsuits

Many patients have been forced to undergo Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip revision surgery due to a defective device. A number of those—as well as many who developed serious health problems after being implanted with a Rejuvenate or ABGII—are among the more than 2,300 plaintiffs who have filed suit against Stryker. The majority of these cases have been consolidated under Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip multidistrict litigation in New Jersey and Minnesota. Seventeen cases have been settled through mediation, and more cases are currently undergoing mediation attempts. A number of bellwether trials are being chosen as being representative of a group of other cases. The first bellwether trials are set for the summer of 2015.
