Metallosis and the Biomet M2A Magnum: An Analysis

May 12, 2015 - The M2A Magnum hip implant is manufactured by Biomet, and, like some other all-metal hip implant devices, the M2A Magnum offers a variety of options which allow the surgeon to more precisely fit the hip implant to the individual patient. Also, like many other all-metal hip implants, the Biomet M2A Magnum has the potential to cause serious problems for the implant recipient, including metallosis, metal toxicity, pseudotumors and total hip failure.

When the metal components of the metal hip implant rub against one another during periods of activity, microscopic metal shards can travel to the patient’s bloodstream or may remain more localized, buried deeply within the hip tissues. The metal ions which find their way to the bloodstream can cause such issues as cobalt and chromium toxicity or metal poisoning. The symptoms of metal poisoning are extensive, and can be responsible for damaging a person’s health, sometimes beyond repair.

Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Metallosis

If you are suffering from Biomet M2A Magnum hip metallosis, you may have pain in your thigh, groin or hip area which is chronic, and severe. The hip, groin or thigh area may also be noticeably inflamed from the cobalt and chromium ions. What you may not be able to see or feel is the deterioration of the bone and tissues surrounding your hip. When this deterioration of bone and tissue reaches a critical level, the bone and tissue can die, causing the implant to loosen and fail. When this occurs, the patient has no choice but to undergo a revision surgery in which the Biomet M2A Magnum hip implant is removed and replaced with a safer alternative.

Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Chromium and Cobalt Poisoning

Regardless of which all-metal hip implant you may have, when the cobalt and chromium ions enter the bloodstream, a number of adverse health issues can result. Patients with Biomet M2A Magnum hip chromium and cobalt poisoning can suffer from hearing and vision loss, reproductive disorders, gastrointestinal, renal, cardiovascular and neurological disorders, anxiety, irritability, depression, skin rashes, vertigo, memory loss, DNA disruption and the development of pseudotumors.

Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Psuedotumors

Pseudotumors are space-occupying tumors in the hip region which are usually not infectious nor cancerous. Recipients of metal hip implants have four times the risk of developing a pseudotumor, according to the latest research. Those who develop Biomet M2A Magnum hip pseudotumors may be unware of the existence of the pseudotumor until it gets fairly large. Biomet M2A Magnum hip pseudotumors can become larger than an orange and are sometimes accompanied by bone loss and chronic, severe pain. In some cases the pseudotumor may place pressure on structures surrounding the hip, leading to serious health issues.

The Status of the Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Lawsuits

You may wonder whether you need a Biomet M2A Magnum hip lawyer to handle your case. In January, 2014, Biomet settled more than 1000 of the lawsuits filed against the company, however the settlement extended only to those who had undergone Biomet M2A Magnum hip revision surgery. If you have undergone revision surgery but you are not sure whether you qualify for the settlement, contact a Biomet M2A Magnum hip lawyer to discuss your options. If you have not undergone revision surgery, speak to a Biomet M2A Magnum hip lawyer to determine whether you have suffered injury as a result of the implant and whether you may be able to pursue compensation for such injury.
