Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Recall

Perhaps you were implanted with a Stryker Rejuvenate or ABGII metal hip device, a DePuy ASR or Pinnacle hip device or a Biomet, Smith & Nephew, Wright or Zimmer Durom hip device. You may have heard of the Stryker Rejuvenate hip recall and the Stryker ABGII hip recall both of which were announced in July, 2012 or the DePuy ASR recall announced in August, 2010. At the time of the Stryker Rejuvenate hip recall, the company noted a higher-than-normal risk of failure, as well as fretting and corrosion at the neck/stem junction, leading to excessive amounts of metal ion debris being generated. The DePuy ASR recall also noted a higher-than normal risk of failure and excessive levels of metal ion debris between the ball and cup.

Have You Experienced Stryker ABGII Hip Dangers?

You may be one of the thousands of people affected by a metal hip implant. You may have experienced such Stryker ABGII hip dangers as metallosis or metal poisoning. While all artificial hip implants carry risks, metal on metal hip implants have their own unique dangers. In metal hip implants, the metal ball and cup slide against one another during periods of patient activity. This causes the release of metal ions into the body. Stryker Rejuvenate hip metal debris can lodge in the hip tissues or can travel to the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the kidneys will attempt to excrete the chromium and cobalt particles, however particularly in those with low-functioning kidneys, this may be impossible.

As the metal ions continue to build up in the body, the Stryker ABGII hip dangers will continue to increase. Different people will react in different ways to heavy metals; some people with relatively low levels of cobalt and chromium in the bloodstream will experience serious, adverse reactions, while others with high levels of the metals in their body may not yet have experienced any negative health symptoms. Stryker Rejuvenate hip dangers and Stryker ABGII hip dangers can be detected using tests such as joint aspiration, soft tissue imaging and blood tests.

The Symptoms of DePuy Pinnacle Hip Metal Blood Poisoning

While cobalt poisoning tends to get the greater amount of attention, chromium poisoning can be equally dangerous. There are many symptoms of DePuy Pinnacle hip metal blood poisoning, including the following:

·         The inability of the body to repair DNA

·         Hypersensitivity and inflammation

·         Liver necrosis

·         Kidney impairment

·         Shortness of breath, asthma and other respiratory issues

·         Loss of vision and hearing

·         Sperm abnormalities and other reproductive disorders

·         The formation of pseudo-tumors

·         Short-term nerve impairment

·         Skin rashes

·         Cardiovascular disorders including fatal cardiomyopathy

·         Neurological issues

·         Decline of cognitive functions

·         Depression, anxiety, irritability

·         Fatigue and poor concentration

·         Atrophy of muscles

·         Seizures, convulsions, tremors

Both cobalt and chromium can be retained in body tissues for long periods of time; excess levels make it much more difficult for the body to rid itself of the cobalt and chromium.

When You Experience Stryker ABGII Hip Metallosis

The cobalt and chromium ions which lodge in the hip tissues can lead to Stryker ABGII hip metallosis. Symptoms of metallosis include chronic pain in the groin, hip and thigh areas, severe inflammation, loss of bone and tissue, total failure of the device and the necessity for the patient to undergo Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery or Stryker ABGII hip revision surgery.  Metallosis has been described as the macroscopic staining of the soft tissues which is associated with abnormal wear. When the metal ions disperse into the body, they are perceived as foreign and the body sends macrophages (special white blood cells) to fight the metal ions. Unfortunately, the body is unable to rid itself of the tiny metal particles or to prevent them from spreading, and the immune system becomes weakened as it continues to attempt to fight the metal shards.

Why Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Revision Surgery is So Risky

Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery is much more complex than the initial hip implant surgery, lasting longer and requiring a much longer recovery time. The hip bones may be in a more fragile condition than they were during the original implant surgery. The long-term risk of dislocation following Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery is at least 7%. The Stryker ABGII hip revision surgery can take as long as five hours, leaving the patient vulnerable to infection, excessive bleeding and nerve damage.

The Stryker stem component is longer than that of other metal hip implants, and therefore can be extremely difficult to remove. Long-term discomfort is generally higher following Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery, and some patients may have permanent, limited range-of-motion. The recovery time can be six weeks or longer, requiring the patient to be off work for an extended period of time.
