What happened regarding the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII Hip Recalls?

If you are the recipient of a metal hip implant, you were likely very concerned regarding the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII hip recalls. At the same time of the Stryker ABGII hip recall, a Stryker Rejuvenate hip recall was also implemented. The Stryker ABGII and the Rejuvenate gained FDA approval via the 510(k) program which fast-tracks medical devices which are substantially similar to another product already being marketed. The FDA database reveals that there had been adverse event reports related to the Stryker ABGII and Rejuvenate prior to the Urgent Field Safety Notification sent out in April, 2012.

The Stryker ABGII hip recall took place only months later, in July, 2012. While the two implants were approved in 2008 and 2009, they were not aggressively marketed until the first part of 2010. Yet by July, 2010, surgeons who were forced to remove the devices from their patients noted the presence of what appeared to be black rust on the removed devices as well as significant amounts of fretting and corrosion. Stryker continued to sell the two devices until the recall.

Do You Suffer From DePuy ASR Hip Metallosis?

During periods of activity, the metal components of your metal hip implant can rub together, causing tiny metal ions to shear away, and leading to DePuy ASR hip metallosis. The ions delve into the hip tissues, causing the patient chronic pain in the hip, thigh and groin areas, as well as serious levels of inflammation. As time goes on and more metal ions lodge into the hip tissues, the bone and tissue surrounding the hip can experience deterioration and even death. The hip device may fail completely, requiring the patient to undergo DePuy ASR hip revision surgery.

When You Must Undergo Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Revision Surgery

If your surgeon has determined your metal hip implant is causing you problems which are severe enough, you may have to undergo Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery. Whether you have symptoms of metallosis or Stryker Rejuvenate hip metal blood poisoning, it can be necessary that you have your hip implant removed. Unfortunately, Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery can be much riskier than the original implant surgery. You will be required to be on the operating table for as long as four to six hours, meaning you could be exposed to nerve damage, excessive blood loss and infection. You will also have a much longer recovery period after Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery, usually as long as six weeks.
